My name is Sania Mohamed. I am 70 years old. Currently, I live in Kolfe Keranio sub-city of Addis Ababa. When I was just 14, my parents forced me into child marriage. I was born in a rural area, where early marriage is traditionally acceptable. However, I was left a victim of early marriage that eventually gave me a fistula. I ran away from marriage and never remarried or bore a child. Living with this type of health condition affected my life in many ways. My life was such a misery that I couldn’t control my bowel movements and work to support my life. I don’t go outside to socialize with my neighbors due to my conditions.
My neighbors feed me as I am unable to support my life anymore. It was one lucky day when people (Home Base Care Providers) from Tesfa Social and Development Association found me alone in my house. When they came to my house, I was lying on a cold floor, since I had no bed to sleep on. My eyes were blurry I couldn’t see things properly. The people cared for me. They took me to a nearby hospital where I received medical care for my eyes. The treatment was effective, and I regained my vision. I can now see clearly. The other day, I received a metallic bed, mattress, and blanket to sleep on. I never felt this warm in a long time. Now my nights are warm. I don’t sleep on the floor anymore. I was blessed the day I found these people. I used to think I would die without sleeping on a bed. My sleepless nights are gone now. I also received an adult diaper that helped me to go out and socialize with my neighbors. I felt like I am a full person now. Additionally, they provided me with sanitary materials like soap and sanitizer that helped to take good care of myself.
Since I was connected with OCMG (Older Citizen Monitoring Group), I started receiving emotional support. I even learned that there a people who care for helpless elderly like me. The HBCP (Home Base Care Providers) regularly visit my house to support me. I am grateful for all the support provided for me. If it wasn’t for this support, I was certain that I may not be alive today.
